Toby, thank you for your post.

Just to correct an aspect that got "lost in translation", what I meant by my comparison of mineral carbonation with fossil fuel combustion was that mineral carbonation also produces a significant amount of recoverable energy, but rather than emitting CO2, it captures CO2!

Cheers,

Rafael Santos

I agree - we will need all complimentary options, including renewables, energy efficiency and other options such as mineralisation. I in fact have spoken with a lot of scientists who would be happy to live above a CCS storage formation - a thorough understanding of the science should way-lay concerns. As far as leakage and groundwater acidification, as you say both valid concerns, but proper site characterisation and monitoring should prevent these concerns from ever coming to reality. I'd be interested on your views following the conference - maybe we could do a piece either in the newsletter or conference summary giving complimentary views from a different perspective?

As I mentioned above, mineralization is a complementary option, ideal for locations were no suitable reservoirs exist, or to replace underground storage near populated areas or seismic zones. Underground storage will be needed, but it needs to done smart.

As for public perception, I don't know many scientists either who would be happy to live on top of a CO2 reservoir. The arguments I hear are always the same: "not in my backyard", and avoid leaving the burden of care on future generations; both valid points.

The public needs to know the long term effects (how much of it will realistically leak or acidify groundwater), the chain of custody (who will be in charge and who will fix problems that may arise) and the outlook for the CO2 (will it be used for something when a better technology comes along). I hope to hear some of that in sessions 9D and 10D.

Thanks Rafael - I notice are presenting in this session, nothing wrong with drumming up some more interest, but try not to criticise the other sessions too much in promoting your own! There are a lot of people working on CCS, and there is a lot of work on public perception, trying to explain the science and safety aspects to a wider audience. If you can, attend the sessions on public acceptance and communication (9D and 10D) - might give you an insight into the work on the area.
